The 8 Most Popular Montana License Plates of 2022
Unlike other states which take a "meh, two or three will do fine" approach to license plate design (looking at you, Idaho and North Dakota), Montana takes a very different approach. There's currently over 200 different specialty plates and they're all tied to a specific cause or non-profit organization. We'll show you the most popular license plates in Montana as of September 2022.
MCA 61-3-332 lays out all the rules to which every license plate must adhere, including their construction, design and what must be on each one before it's approved to be used on any vehicle. The Montana Department of Justice keeps a tab going every year on how popular each plate is by showing you how many have been sold, you can view that list HERE.
The Plates
There are so many specialty plates you can get for your vehicle, and each one costs a little bit more money than the standard plates, with the extra funds going directly to a non-profit or organization. It's a great way to not only suit your plate to your style of vehicle, but also to show what you care about.
As we've mentioned before, the #1 issue that concerns Montanans continues to be CONSERVATION (source). Looking at this list, you'll quickly see why. We'll work our way up to the biggest seller at the bottom.
