Unlike other states which take a "meh, two or three will do fine" approach to license plate design (looking at you, Idaho and North Dakota), Montana takes a very different approach. There's currently over 200 different specialty plates and they're all tied to a specific cause or non-profit organization. We'll show you the most popular license plates in Montana as of September 2022.
MCA 61-3-332 lays out all the rules to which every license plate must adhere, including their construction, design and what must be on each one before it's approved to be used on any vehicle. It's a great way to not only suit your plate to your style of vehicle, but also to show what you care about.

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation - 8,726
The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation encourages conservation through hunting itself as well as protecting elk ranges, improving public access to hunters and sportsman, and wildlife management.
One Heart Warriors - 8,761
When you get this plate, you support One Heart Warriors, an organization which focuses on spiritual and religious ministries within Native reservations.
Glacier National Park Conservancy - 9,380
These plates from Glacier National Park Conservancy cost an extra $65, with $25 of the proceeds going directly to GNP to help support trail maintenance and youth education programs within the park.
Milestown Community Improvement Inc - 10,421
The "original black plate" of Montana, getting this one supports improvements to recreational facilities in Miles City; baseball fields, the water park, the disc golf course, and playgrounds.
Boone & Crockett Club - 11,062
The Boone & Crockett Club is one of the oldest conservation organizations in the United States. They advocate for wildlife conservation and promote ethical hunting practices, and their national headquarters is in Missoula.
Missoula Downtown Foundation - 12,054
Although it's black and sexy (just like my heart) this plate's funds go directly into breathing life into the City of Missoula through the Downtown Association. The funds raised help pay for park improvements, decorative banners, holiday lights, trail kiosks and the Small Business Support Fund.
Sweet Grass Community Foundation - 12,669
Just east of Bozeman, Sweet Grass County is the home of this non-profit for non-profits, helping raise money for their community. They have grants which foster non-profit growth and community activism.
Bird Of Pray Foundation - 13,238
The best-selling specialty plate in Montana of 2022 goes to Bird Of Pray Foundation. The 501c(3) based in Billings provides vast humanitarian aid to children, shelters, and foster families in Montana. It costs $55 the first year and $35 for every year after that.
