There’s more than enough pain at the pump as it stands now. We don’t need bonus problems.

I just drove around the state of Montana, and boy, did I feel it. The most I paid was $4.09 a gallon. And when you’re rolling around in a Toyota Tundra that gets approximately 12.8 miles per gallon, you do not “fill up and forget it.” You design your day around gas stations.

So uh… the wallet got smacked around. Now picture paying that… without even receiving gas.

The Pump Is Charging… But Not Pumping

There’s a video going around TikTok that has some folks doing a double-take.

A woman captured video of a guy at a gas station holding the pump without squeezing the handle, and the numbers keep going up. No gas flowing. No click. Just money quietly disappearing. That’s the sort of thing that would cause you to immediately glance down at your own pump like, “Hold on… You better not be doing this to me too?”

And according to reporting from Motor1, this isn’t just some one-off weird glitch. There have been instances of faulty pumps that keep racking up charges even when fuel isn’t being dispensed. Not exactly what you want to hear when gas is already eyeing “guess I’m staying home” prices.

Could It Happen Here?

That’s the big question.

There’s no sign this is a widespread phenomenon everywhere, much less that every pump in the country is secretly stealing money from people. But it is enough to get you to pay attention.

Places like Montana, where driving is not optional. We’re not getting on a subway. If you have a job, are running for groceries, or heading out to hunt, fish, or just get out of town… you’re burning fuel.

A Rapid Reality Check at the Pump

This is likely one of those “rare but real” instances. But it doesn’t hurt to be a bit more aware. Watch the numbers. Ensure fuel is actually flowing. Do not just set it and zone out scrolling your phone.

Because at four bucks a gallon… every drop counts.
