Will Walmart Be Closing Stores in Montana in 2024?
Retail stores have been on the forefront of a heated battle for months and even years now. They are defending themselves on two fronts. On one side, they are getting attacked by e-commerce and online shopping. On the other, they are defending shoplifting and record losses. Needless to say, GIANT retail stores like Walmart are becoming a little "battle fatigued."
Walmart closed a bunch of stores in 2023, and it appears they are looking to axe even more in 2024.
According to TheStreet
"These stores lose tens of millions of dollars a year, and their annual losses nearly doubled in just the last five years," Walmart said in a press release, adding, "We have invested hundreds of millions of dollars... It was hoped that these investments would help improve our stores’ performance. Unfortunately, these efforts have not materially improved the fundamental business challenges our stores are facing."
Walmart closed stores in 14 different states this past year. So far in 2024, they have only announced the closure of 2 stores. Both stores are located in California.
Could some Walmart stores in Montana soon be next on the chopping block? I'm willing to bet that all Walmart locations in Montana are performing just fine. So it is highly unlikely that we will lose any. At least in 2024. The Walmart locations in Montana not only serve the local communities they are in but also play a big part in the rural areas around them.
Walmart claims that they don't need to rely as much on having so many "brick-and-mortar" locations as they do. They are hoping that the popularity of Walmart.com will supplement the need to have more stores.
