Hunters Scoring Big in Central Montana This Year

Hunting season in Montana is certainly in full swing as two full weekends have passed already.  With just a few weeks left until the final day of the general deer and elk seasons on Sunday, Dec. 1, have you bagged the big one?

Or has it just been you taking your rifle on a nice walk through the forest?  If that is the case, you are lagging behind the rest of the hunters in central Montana.  In a recent report, numbers at the Augusta, MT check station show above average for this year.

Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks Say Numbers Are Decent This Year

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Region 4 in central Montana is reporting that hunters this year are above average in not just game harvested, but also in the number of hunters themselves.

So far, hunters that have checked in with the station in Augusta have numbered at 632 through November 3rd.  That is a nearly 15% increase over last year, but still below the 10-year average of 682 hunters.

Harvest Numbers for the 2024 Season So Far in Montana

Of those that stopped into the check station in Augusta, MWFP says they are seeing decent results.  As of the November 3rd date, the following have been harvested:

  • 51 Elk
  • 56 Mule Deer
  • 49 Whitetail Deer
  • 6 Antelope
  • 1 Moose
  • 1 Bighorn Sheep
  • 1 Mountain Goat

Hunters are reminded that they must stop at any check station they pass while hunting, whether or not they have harvested game.  The station located in Augusta is the only biological check station in region 4 and operates seven days a week from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on weekdays and 10 p.m. on weekends.
