Yes, spring and summer in Montana mean one thing for drivers: road construction season is officially here, and in a big way. Here in Missoula, there are a number of projects already happening, with more getting underway soon that drivers need to know about.

Upcoming Higgins Avenue Closures

One project that could affect a lot of people is happening on Higgins Avenue. The City of Missoula Public Works and Mobility Division says Higgins between Keith Avenue and University Avenue will be closed overnight on Monday, May 18, and again on Wednesday, May 20, for emergency roadway repairs connected to an ongoing water main replacement project.

Why Overnight Work? Minimizing Traffic Disruption

In order to help reduce the impact on daytime traffic, the crews are doing the work overnight. Another reason work is being done overnight is that Higgins is one of the busiest streets in town, and there's limited availability of alternate routes in that area.

The overnight closures will begin no earlier than 7 p.m. on May 18 and reopen by 7 a.m. the following morning. During the daytime, crews will place road plates over the work area so traffic can continue moving. Overnight work will resume on Wednesday, May 20, with the roadway expected to be fully paved and reopened by 7 a.m. Thursday, May 21.

Safety First: Navigating Construction Zones

For the safety of workers and drivers, the city is asking everyone to slow down, use caution near the construction zone, and, if possible, take an alternate route during those overnight closure periods.
