The last weekend was a holiday weekend, but not everyone was taking time off. California lawmakers approved a bill that would require new cars to warn drivers when they travel 10 mph over the posted speed limit.

According to NPR the initial bill proposed car manufacturers use technology to slow vehicles down if they went 10 mph over the posted speed limit. The pushback was strong against that initial bill. The bill was reworked to suggest "passive" technology that would warn drivers when their vehicle is traveling 10 mph over posted speed limits.

There are already vehicles that use similar technology, so I am told. None of my vehicles have this technology, I don't have any vehicle newer than 12 years old. The bill would require the technology to be installed on California cars by 2030. I realized that is less than 6 years away.

When California passes laws like this, other states take notice. There was talk about California banning small propane canisters, and that led to speculation that they could be banned in other states including Montana.

If car manufacturers are required to put this technology in new cars for California, it would make sense for them to put the technology in all new vehicles, not just the ones to be sold in California. That could mean in the near future, you may be hearing a lot of beeping in new Montana cars.

Montana has been known to have it's share of speeders. Who still remembers the "reasonable and prudent" speed limit? There are times when drivers may not know what the posted speed limit is on some of our roads. I have been guilty of that myself. Maybe this technology can help Montana drivers obey the laws and be safer on our roads.
