The exhibit, titled The Lost Weekend: The Photography of May Pang, features a collection of candid, intimate photographs taken during Lennon’s so-called “Lost Weekend” period in the 1970s. The 18-month stretch between late 1973 and 1975 marked a highly creative and unusually prolific chapter in Lennon’s post-Beatles career. With Pang’s presence and encouragement, Lennon was often captured in relaxed, unguarded moments rarely seen by the public.

Unveiling Lennon’s Musical Legacy
During this era, Lennon released acclaimed solo albums such as Mind Games and Walls and Bridges, the latter of which featured his only solo No. 1 hit single, “Whatever Gets You Through the Night.” The period also included collaborations and connections with major artists, including Elton John, David Bowie, Harry Nilsson, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.

Pang herself can even be heard on the track “#9 Dream,” where she famously whispers Lennon’s name, an intimate detail that has added to the era's mythos. She has since published books reflecting on her time with Lennon, including Loving John, John Lennon: The Lost Weekend, and Instamatic Karma.
Rediscovering the Lost Weekend Era

The exhibition coincides with renewed interest in the period. The documentary The Lost Weekend: A Love Story came out in 2022 and is now available for streaming. For fans, the Missoula showing offers a rare opportunity to experience a deeply personal visual record of Lennon during one of his most creatively charged chapters.
