After the destructive storm Missoula experienced this past July, it may feel like there's already been a fair amount of pickup and disposal of natural materials.

But the reality is there are still areas of Missoula that have storm debris either in boulevards or in the streets. Many trees have also been marked by the city for trimming. Soon, leaf removal will begin and it's important to know: storm debris should not be included with any leaves that you'd like picked up as part of the City of Missoula's annual leaf collection.

What Should I Do If I Still Have Storm Debris at My House?

According to the City of Missoula's Leaf Collection site, you should call 406-552-6360 if you still have storm debris. They say they will try to pick up debris before leaf collection starts.

When Does Leaf Collection Start in Missoula?

As always the starting date will be weather dependent, but this year collection will begin on November 5. You can see the full map with areas and dates at this link, but if you already know your area, here are the dates for pickup:

  • Special District 1: November 5
  • Area 1: November 5 - 8
  • Area 2: November 12-15 and 18
  • Special District 2: November 19
  • Area 3: November 19-22 and 25
  • Special District 3: November 12
  • Area 4: November 26-27 and 29

For those in Special District 1 and Area 1, remember that your leaf collection will also begin on election day and that may be a busy day in your neighborhood depending on whether or not you live close to a polling place. You'll want to make sure your leaves are raked into the street before November 5, but that's true for all areas. Everyone should rake their leaves into the street before the first day of pickup in their area.

For those living in Area 4, those dates surround Thanksgiving Day so you may want to let any visitors know there will be piles of leaves if they plan to park on the street.

For more details about parking restrictions and other tips about raking leaves into the street, visit the City of Missoula Leaf Collection site.
