Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - Just after midnight on April 11, 2026, Missoula Police Department officers responded to a report of a juvenile female who had been shot in the 4900 block of Alex Lane. Police Public Information Officer Whitney Bennett has the details.

“The female was transported to the hospital by ambulance but unfortunately succumbed to her injury,” Bennett said. “Detectives responded and conducted interviews. All people present during the incident were identified, and several interviews were conducted.” 

Bennett said their hearts go out to the families impacted by this tragedy.

“No assistance from the public is required, and there is no risk to the public,” Bennett said. “The juvenile male was placed in custody and is currently being held on the charge of Negligent Homicide. Due to the ages of those involved and respect for families, the identities of those involved will not be released at this time. This is an active investigation, and no additional information will be released at this time.” 

We will provide more information if, and when, it is released. 

 Vehicle vs. Motorcycle Crash on Reserve

Shortly after 2:30 p.m. on April 10, 2026, officers with the Missoula Police Department responded to a report of a crash involving a motor vehicle and a motorcycle at the intersection of Reserve Street and Spurgin Road. 

“A 35-year-old male motorcyclist sustained serious bodily injury and was transported to a local hospital for treatment,” Bennett said. “The driver of the involved vehicle, identified as 41-year-old Brian Ballenger, did not remain at the scene and was later located by officers in the area of Schilling Avenue and Fairview Avenue, where he was taken into custody.” 

Bennett said officers are following Serious Bodily Injury (SBI) protocols.

“The driver was processed for suspected impairment,” Bennett said. “Detectives, the Missoula Police Department Crash Investigation Team, and MPD drone operators are assisting with the ongoing investigation. Ballenger was transported to the Missoula County Jail and remanded on charges for Negligent Vehicular Assault (Serious Bodily Injury), Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and/or Drugs (2nd offense), and Resisting Arrest.” 

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has video footage and has not yet spoken with law enforcement is asked to contact the Missoula Police Department at (406) 552-6300. This is an ongoing investigation.
