Montana Highway Patrol Colonel Retiring, Effective Immediately

Announced yesterday by the Montana Department of Justice & Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen, Colonel Steve Lavin, who has served the Montana Highway Patrol for over three decades, has announced his retirement from public service.

Attorney General Austin Knudsen thanked Lavin for his service to the state of Montana during his tenure at the department.

I’m grateful to Steve for his decades-long career with the Montana Highway Patrol. It was a pleasure working with him during his tenure as colonel to keep Montanans safe in their communities and on the road. I wish him well in his retirement.

In the interim, Lieutenant Colonel Kurt Sager will assume the role of acting head of the Montana Highway Patrol. The state awaits who will be appointed as the new colonel, continuing the leadership and commitment to public safety that Colonel Lavin has given during his tenure.

Colonel Lavin was appointed by Attorney General Austin Knudsen in January 2021 to the position, and retired from the Montana Highway Patrol after over 30 YEARS of service and dedication.
