The role-playing game that brought to life the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout for the high-tech console generation is getting gameplay based on the City of Missoula. Redditor elytraman says they will soon release a mod featuring the Garden City complete with maps, custom assets and gameplay.

For those not familiar with the Fallout franchise, it is a series of games in which our timeline splits with the fictional one in-game somewhere in the 1950s, featuring cars powered by nuclear fusion, robots and a post-apocalypse America after a nuclear war with China. Those lucky enough to be placed in secret vaults underground just prior to nukes being dropped all over America then emerge to the surface after a hundred years, dealing with grossly-mutated wildlife and power struggles as humans attempt to rebuild society from nuclear rubble.

How Is It Done?

Bethesda Game Studios has released the last 3 Fallout games, as well as their extremely popular cousin The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. All those games were made and run using Bethesda's native Creation Engine, which is now over a decade old.

After releasing Fallout 4 in 2015, players complained of excessive bugs and glitches in the game, as well as incomplete quests and side missions. So many of them were present that Bethesda made the bold choice to release their Creation Kit (which they themselves used to create the game) to the general public for free, allowing players to customize their games the way they wanted to. And it became one of the best decisions in video game history. Ever.

As a longtime Playstation player, I have a modest 23 active mods. Some players have as many as 100+ running at once on PC.

Mods for Fallout and Skyrim can be found on Bethesda's website for XBox and Playstation players, and on the Nexus for PC gamers. Mods for custom armors, quest completion, weaponry and even custom items can be found. The possibilities of mods and enjoyment are seemingly endless, even for a 7 year old game.

What Will Be In Fallout: Missoula?

So far, there's not much to go on. But the mod developer has released some images of the work already complete in his Reddit community r/falloutmissoula and has promised to recreate the area as it would appear after decades of nuclear fallout. The dev is also open to suggestions from players to make it as immersive as possible.

This map features several known areas in Missoula proper, as well as areas that in-game factions of survivors have given new names to.

The mod developer has also revealed that his content will allow the player-character to start at Lolo Steakhouse, which surprisingly still stands. Players will then meet a character named Randall and proceed to Fort Missoula (now home to a group of raiders known as "The Target Range Cult") to begin the next phase of their progression.

I've been a Skyrim and Fallout fan for years, so seeing Missoula come to life in one of my favorite games ever will be a blessing. Strap into your power armor and don't forget your laser rifles!
