Montana is full of charming and picturesque towns where you will immediately feel welcomed. From old-school downtowns to historic buildings, almost every Montana town seems to have a story to tell.

Of course, with all that history and beautiful scenery, it's no wonder that Montana has been the background in several movies.

Popular films like A River Runs Through It, Forrest Gump, The Horse Whisperer, and The Revenant are just a few movies that have been at least partially filmed here, and of course, there is the mega-hit "Yellowstone" which is one of the most popular shows on TV.  Montana is no stranger to producing some award-winning actors and actresses such as Gary Cooper and Michelle Williams.

Of course, one of the most popular forms of entertainment nowadays, especially around Christmas is the Hallmark Movie Channel. Let's be honest here, they are not the most complicated plots.  It usually goes something like this...

A man or woman moves to a charming small town to either start a new job or to close down the only factory in town.  They're in a relationship, but it's going nowhere and the significant other stayed back in the big city.  Soon they meet someone that is completely opposite to them and they can't stand each other, yet over time they seem to fall in love.  Enter the significant other who shows up by surprise to discover that something is going on with the former rivals, yet in the end not only is the town saved, but the former enemies exchange vows and everyone lives happily ever after.

Now that we have the plot out of the way, what about the location?  As mentioned, there are a whole lot of charming small Montana towns, but for our money, there are 3 that really stand out as the perfect backdrop for a Hallmark Movie.

Hamilton, Montana

This charming town located in the Bitterroot Valley could be a perfect backdrop for any Hallmark Movie. Hamilton has a rich history and is home to some stunning views, plus the downtown is super quaint and the people are very friendly. Plus, being surrounded by ranches doesn't hurt the plot line either.

Livingston, Montana

What can we say about Livingston that hasn't already been said?  Recently called "The Coolest Town In Montana", Livingston has something for everyone.  From the gorgeous downtown and the charming businesses that line the streets, to its easy access to Paradise Valley and Yellowstone, Livingston would be an ideal backdrop for a Hallmark Movie, especially during Christmas.

Whitefish, Montana

Whitefish has been voted the best small town in America and is a very popular place for both locals and tourists. Of course, the ski resort brings in all kinds of people during the winter, and the town's close proximity to Glacier National Park means that it's a busy place in the summer as well.  The downtown area with the mountains in the background screams Hallmark Movie.
