As part of the band, choir and orchestra curriculum, music students perform two concerts each semester. Here are two of UM's festive music events for the fall.

The first is Hidden Gems at the Dennison Theater on Friday October 7th. It will feature performances from the UM Concert Band and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Band Director Kevin Griggs on what the audience can expect:

"Hidden Gems" refers to a few of the tunes that have been selected. Dr. James Smart is the conductor of the wind ensemble and he's selected some music by Holst as well as some by more modern composers.
It's an array of music that has something for a number of different tastes, it features quite a few UM students; music majors as well as students from other majors from around campus. They've been working since the start of school to prepare this concert and this will be their first opportunity to show what they're doing to the public.
With the robust arts scene in Missoula it's nice to be a part of that and show what the university is doing to contribute.

On Sunday October 30th, UM choral students as well as Missoula Community Chorus will perform their annual show, arguably the one most students and audiences look forward to the most every year.

This year, the students will be in their Halloween costumes, and there will be trick-or-treating for the kids (or anyone who wants to let their inner child out!) during intermission and after the show.

Dr. Coreen Duffy is the Director of Choral Activities at UM. She will be directing the UM students during their performance also spoke with me about the Spooktacular:

We have a couple pieces about autumn, also [some pieces] honoring the dead, and we have several pieces for Yom Kippur that we'll be doing. And then we have some sea shanties, some lost at sea stuff...the kids are gonna be singing "Ghost Ship." We're also doing the sea shanty favorite "The Wellerman."
One of the students is conducting a piece called "The Lover's Ghost" and we also have from Transylvania 2, "I'm In Love With A Monster."

It's lots of music from all genres, there should be something to please everyone; people who are interested in more serious choral music, people who are just there to have fun and listen to spooky stuff for Halloween, it's all in there! Everybody should have a really good time.

The choral sound is likely to delight your spirits. Audience members are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes to be as festive as the students. If you can't make the show, it will also be livestreamed on GrizTix. Show information and tickets for the live performance and the livestream can be found HERE.
